Chapter 11: attachment to others and development of self: attachment: emotional bond with specific person that"s enduing across space & time, usually discussed in regard to relation between infant & caregivers, although they can also occur in adulthood. Insecure/resistant attachment: clingy & stay close to caregiver instead of exploring environment (10%: ss: upset when caregiver leaves, not easily comforted upon return, simultaneously seek comfort but resist it when offered. The development of conceptions of self: self: conceptual system made of one"s thoughts & attitudes about oneself, the self in infancy: Individual"s self-conceptions influence overall feelings of well-being & competence. Identity vs identity confusion: psychological stage during adolescence either develops identity (erikson) or experiences incomplete & sometimes incoherent sense of self. Identity achievement: integration of various aspects of self into coherent whole that is stable. Identity confusion: incomplete & sometimes incoherent sense of self that often occurs.
