All diagnoses listed in dsm considered psychopathology: other sexual problems are not recognized as mental disorders but still cause. Many sexual problems tend to be multi-causal and multi-determined. Intrapsychic factors in the development of sexual problems. Psychological factors that play role begin to develop in early childhood based on interactions w/ and observations of family members. Ex: way diaper and bathe, whether touch child and genitals w/ affection. Parents emotional and sexual relationship also transmits messages re intimacy. Most people say parents never taught about sex but don"t notice how much learned from parents" silence surrounding sexuality. Sense of taboo acquired early and wordlessly may make it difficult to communicate freely in adulthood. Lack of discussion or mislabelling may lead to absence of accurate vocab. Thus even a normal canadian childhood can lead to discomfort w/ sexuality. Discomfort intensified if sexually abused in childhood or sexually assaulted thereafter.
