Most eating-related problems arise from eating too much (industrialized countries); 65%+ of us population is overweight or clinically obese (epidemic status); has resulting financial & personal costs) There has also been increase in disorders related w/ eating too little; 3% of americans suffer from anorexia or bulimia. Primary purpose of hunger = increase the probability of eating. Primary purpose of eating = to supply the body w/ the molecular building blocks & e needed to survive & func. Digestion: = the gastrointestinal process of breaking down food & absorbing constituents into the body, food hasn"t been consumed unless digested. Func in cephalic phase lower the levels of bloodborne fuels (primarily glucose) w/ anticipation of influx.
