RELS 161 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Bruce Lawrence, Premillennialism, Islamic Fundamentalism
Document Summary
Fundamentalism is when people think the words in the bible are literally true. It is a word, which everyone is familiar with now and it relates to terrorist acts. We don"t need to understand islam; we need to analyze the failure of traditional religion to encompass modernity. It is seen as islamist terror resistance to american hegemony. Religious fundamentalism as it is broadly understood has been a major source of conflict since lately. The death toll from modern religious conflicts is intense but not all these conflicts are due to religious fundamentalism they also include factors such as ethnicity and nationalism. But religion has replaced old ideologies as the principal challenge to a world order based on the hegemonic power of the liberal capitalist. If all believing muslims are fundamentalists then the term is useless, because it fails to distinguish between the hard-edged militant who seeks to islamize society and the quietest that avoids politics completely.
