The Poverty of Morality – Daniel Miller The Poverty of Morality  The issue lies between the relationship people have with goods rather than the goods themselves Is Consumption Materialistic Consumption is seen as materialism Throughout history consumption was seen as evil Production creates the world Consumption uses it up 3 Assumptions about Consumption  Consumption is materialistic Consumption is capitalist Consumption is incompatible environmentalism Another assumption is that mass consumption is a form of Americanization of the world Critique of Materialism Individuals and social relations lose integrity due to commodity culture Materialism Attachment or devotion to object at the expense of attachment to people Consumption is more than peoples guilt and anxieties over buying goods Are most commodities of benefit to most people? Contemporary critique of materialism Liberate people from things in order for them to engage in social relations The superficial person who is drawn to commodity culture is someone other than the true self Some consumption is seen as more beneficial than others Books, medicine vs. clothing Both are still considered consumption Consumption still occurs even with places that don’t produce a lot of goods People have been gathering food, collect food and always strive for more Symbolism also leads to consumerism In india people go broke just for weddings People waste all their money to make other people think they have wealth Is there symbolic structure to our own material culture? (for our modern society) Material culture can be traced to radical transformations in ideals of love and care Eg getting flowers vs. sharing moments together People focus on goods to enhance our relationship with other people, not to take value away from  others People don’t focus on buying and consuming for ourselves, we are concerned about other people Products of Mass Consumption Cars, clothes New Ways of Ob
