Chapter 1: stdpng, social, tool, divine, physical adaptation, natural, genetic. The divine source the theory that if human babies were not taught any language, they would start speaking the language of god. Egyptian pharaoh psamtik isolated two babies only surrounded by a mute shepherd and goats. He heard them utter be like bread in turkish most likely mimicking goats. Natural ability to identify sounds in the environment, allowing humans to make a connection between a sound and the thing producing the sound. Onomatopoeia sounds similar to the noises they describe (bang, swoosh, buzz, bang, boom) The pooh-pooh theory instinctive sounds that people make in emotional circumstances (pain, anger, joy) ex. Yo-he-ho theory sounds evolved from physical effort w/ several people. Might have developed a set of hums, grunts, groans and curses while lifting. Distinct features humans have that other species don"t that may be able to support speech production.
