Begin at looking at edge of network and look at components that are most familiar. Then from edge, we move to network core and examine switching and routing computer networks. End systems are also referred as hosts : they run application programs such as web browser program. Hosts are divided into two categories: clients and servers. Servers: more powerful machines that store and distribute web pages, steam videos, relay emails, etc. Network that physically connects an end system to the first router on a path from the end system to any other distant end system. Homeaccess - dsl, cable, ftth, dial-up, and satellite. Two prevalent types of broadband residential access. Dsl internet access is obtained from the same local telephone company. Also the telephone company is its isp. Modem takes digital data and translates it to high-frequency tones for transmission over telephone wires to the central office. Analog signals are translate back into digital format at dslam.
