107 views3 pages

Document Summary

Packet switches and links that interconnect that internet"s end systems. Source breaks long messages into smaller chunks of data known as packets. Packet travels through communication links and pack switches (two types, routers, link- layer switches) Packets are transmitted over communication link at a rate equal to the full transmission. Packet switch must receive the entire packet before it can begin to transmit the first but of the packet onto the outbound link. Example: source has three packets, each consisting of l bits to send to the destination. Each packet switch ahs multiple links attached to it. Each link has an output buffer (or output queue) that stores packets that the router is about to send into that link. If arriving packet needs to be transmitted, but link is busy with another transmitting packet, the arriving packet has to wait in output buffer. Depend on level of congestion in network.
