CRM 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Travis Hirschi, Social Learning Theory, Richard Herrnstein
Document Summary
Psychology as a discipline has several perspectives including: Psychoanalysis, behaviourism, social cognitivism/social learning, + developmental psychology. Iq/intelligence has been linked to criminality for many years-since even lombroso. Early positivists tried to find the connection b/t feeble-mindedness1 and criminality. Edwin sutherland (1931) argued that the association of low iq and criminality was flawed. He explained that they were biased and unreliable and that similar rates of of intelligence could be found in criminal and noncriminal populations. This was not a popular idea and was forgotten about for decades. 5(cid:1004) (cid:455)ea(cid:396)s late(cid:396) (cid:894)(cid:1005)(cid:1013)(cid:1011)(cid:1011)(cid:895) uthe(cid:396)la(cid:374)d(cid:859)s a(cid:396)gu(cid:373)e(cid:374)t (cid:449)as (cid:396)esu(cid:396)fa(cid:272)ed (cid:271)(cid:455) t(cid:396)a(cid:448)is hi(cid:396)s(cid:272)hi a(cid:374)d mi(cid:272)hael. Ex. doing poorly in school can lead to punishments which can lead to problematic behaviour. Low intelligence can be predictive of future issues such as unemployment. Black people are also overrepresented in official crime statistics.
