Document Summary

Nonverbal communication: behavior other than written and spoken language that creates meaning (tone of voice, eye contact, expression, posture, use of personal space); main way we communicate feelings, attitudes and emotions. Nonverbal cues help us manage verbal messages (substitute for, repeat, contradict and regulate what we say) and augment the emotional meaning of verbal messages (color the emotion we are expressing) Interaction adaptation theory: describes how people adapt to the communication behavior of others, we respond to both verbal and nonverbal expressions to navigate through communication. Interactional synchrony: mirroring of others nonverbal behaviors, shows interest and positive regard. Nonverbal cues are often ambiguous, or interpreted differently by others. Gender differences: women smile and are more emotionally expressive than men, have a more prolonged gaze, are less likely to use gestures, stand more close, less likely to touch, etc. Nonverbal cues are continuous which makes them difficult to study, categorize and interpret.
