Allow the client to occupy their hands while talking. Get out of the office whenever possible and appropriate. A sense of humor is invaluable for working with adolescents. Avoid taking an expert stance, until the relationship is fairly stable. Avoid asserting your credentials to a defiant, aggressive, adolescent or group. Emphasize commonalities by noting similar experiences you have undergone. Use a variety of media to allow the client to express what is inside without having to rely solely on verbal skills. Avoid aiming only for insight with client who are not cognitively incline in that direction.
