CYC 601 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Jargon, Likert Scale, Precoding
Document Summary
Tend to me used in qualitative research. Answers are on respondents own terms, and not chosen by researchers. Possible to tap the participants" knowledge and more genuine. Useful for exploring new / changing ideas. Answers have to be coded: long process. Low response rate may be possible because of how long it would take. Labels / titles given to themes / categories. Data are gathered, then themes / categories of behaviours are discerned: e. g. , hostile to outsides or not hostile to outsiders . Then they are assigned with a number, then they are to be recorded on a computer. Process where researcher designs a coding frame. Respondents assigns their answers to a category, with a number already set up by the researcher. Coding is also used in qualitative research, but role is different. Available answers may provide clarification for confused respondents. Reduce bias in recording answers: no interpretation required by researcher.
