CYC 601 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11, 13: Bar Chart, Standard Deviation, Central Tendency
Document Summary
How ethical issues are handled affects the integrity of specific research initiatives as well as the reputation of social science as a whole. First priority should be to ensure that the people being studied are not harmed by their participation. The welfare of research subjects should take priority over everything else, including the acquisition of knowledge. Reb (research ethics board) has to approve every research project. It may be more difficult to get approval for qualitative research since it is sometimes considered less scientific, with the board preferring the epistemology of quantitative research. Researchers themselves disagree on the ethical acceptability of certain research practices. Maintains that humans should not be treated as mere objects or as means to an end. Subjects must give free, informed, and ongoing consent (the principle of free and informed consent) however this can prove difficult. Its difficult to give prospective participants absolutely all the information required to make an informed decision.
