Professional Development
A Child and Youth Care Approach to Professional Development and Training (Curry,
Lawler, Schneider-Munoz & Fox, 2011)
- During the past 20 years there has been an increased awareness of the importance of
professional development and training in child and youth serving fields due to the
complex challenges that youth and families face
- Unavailability of competent, well-prepared practitioners to staff programs
- Advances in child and youth work include a widely agreed upon definition of the field,
the development of competencies, continued development of the knowledge base,
establishment of a national certification proves, professional associations, ethical
standards, international collaboration, and increased development in specific education
and training programs
- The culture of the field is relationships, as the children we serve are likely to have never
had a caring, supportive caregiver, relational disruptions should be the main focus
- In a relational CYC model the actual child-professional caregiver relationships may be
the key to successful interventions
- Considering the context in which professional development occurs, effective PDT
programs plans for implementation of training within the culture of CYC settings
- Importance of integrating training and education to promote child and youth care learning
in the class and on the job
- Unconscious incompetence meaning not aware of his or her lack of competence and
therefore may not realize the importance of training in competence; conscious
incompetence meaning workers being aware of their knowledge, attitude of skill
limitations which leads to motivation to increase competence; conscious competence as
in the emergence of competence through the introduction of new skills; and unconscious
competence meaning skills performed automatically, effortless activity, but lacking
mindfulness
- Conscious unconscious competence meaning that workers can’t only perform at a
proficient level but are able to articulate the processes involved in competent
performance; supervisors should be functioning at this level
- The youth work milieu provides an experience where daily activities serve as a medium
in which children can safely test out skills, accomplish goals, and form their identity; this
is guided by the practitioner with the use of individual and group activities
- Case studies show how and why children are developing life skills through the milieu in
order to show practitioners what worked and what didn’t for certain clients
- Training must communicate intimate knowledge of the clients and of the harm that has
been done to them, need information that can be applied variously to different situations
Professional Development and Career Building in Child and Youth Care (Gharabaghi,
2008)
- Many might think that the foundation of a practitioner’s knowledge and skills is built on
pre-service training, however many practitioners don’t have any education, which has an
impact on the professional development of CYC
