God; he marries them, kills them, and takes their money; protagonist/villain of the movie; charming, moralistic; able to lie and dupe anyone. Powell and dumped in the bottom of a river cellmates with powell before his execution, where this one learns about the money and wife. John harper: ben"s son; makes a promise to guard his sister and the money. Pearl harper: john"s little sister; does whatever john says; likes powell, but won"t tell him the secret because of john. Willa harper: ben"s widow; falls in love with john and will do anything to. Bart the hangman: a cop who feels bad after hanging ben; he doesn"t feel so when he"s about to hang powell. Icey spoon: willa"s boss; an elderly woman who is always speaking her.
