Document Summary

Although each group has cultural artifacts, it is rare for one person to experience all those artifacts and never all at once. We instead experience smaller sets of signs and artifacts. We refer to these signs as texts. A text is a set of signs related to each other insofar as their meanings all contribute to the same. Things other than or in addition to words can be texts as well set of effects or functions. A baseball game can be a text because all the signs within the game work together to produce several effects. A group of random objects is not a text. Jennifer lopez can be considered a text made up of how she sings, dances, dresses, her romantic affairs, her public image. Sign = signifier (image) + signified (the concept) Rain = r a i n + drops of water from the sky. The relationship between signifier and signified is arbitrary.
