The term gothic is applied primarily to the architecture, and also the painting and sculpture, from mid 12c to the 16c. Literally refers to the germanic tribes who invaded greece and italy, sacked rome (410 a. d. ) Blamed from destroying the remains of classical style. Dates from 1137-1144, originating in the ile-de-france , invented by abbot suger of the french royal monastery at saint-denis. Adviser to louis vi/vii; was appointed regent of france while louis vii was on the second crusade. He wanted to rebuild the carolingian church of saint-denis, and wanted a new type of architecture to convey the divine right of kings. Inspired in his preparation by the writings of saint denis (really. Dionysius), who emphasized mathematical harmony and the effects of light. His synthesis of existing styles and new ones in his construction are revolutionary. Reconstruction of saint-denis featured ribbed vaults, and a chevet that emphasized the integration of light.
