Controlling - the process of measuring performance and taking action to ensure
desired results

Planning sets the directions and allocates resources
Organizing bring people and material resources together in working

Types of controls
Feedforward control - ensures that direction and resources are right before the
work begins
Work inputs, solve problems before they occur
Concurrent control - focuses on what happens during the work process
Work throughputs, solve problems while they are occurring
Feedback controls - ensure that final results are up to desired standards
Workout outputs, solve problems after they occur
Self-control - (internal control) occurs through self discipline in fulfilling many
responsibilities
Bureaucratic control - influences behaviour through authority, policies,
procedures, job descriptions, budgets and day-to-day supervision
Control that flows through a company’s hierarchy of authority
Another level of bureaucratic control comes from the organizations external
environment - laws and regulations
Clan control - influences behaviours through norms and expectations set by the
organizational culture
Market control - the influence of market competition on the behaviour of
organizations and their members
Businesses show the influence of market control in the way they adjust
products, pricing, promotion and other practices in response to customer
feedback and competitors
Steps in the control process
1. Establish objectives and standards
Output standards - measure performance results in terms of quantity,
quality, cost or time
Input standards - measure work efforts that go into a performance task
