GMS 802 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Theory X And Theory Y, Hawthorne Effect, W. M. Keck Observatory
Document Summary
Understanding how managers go about this process and in particular, how they get various stakeholders to cooperate in accomplishing organizational objectives is critical to running a great business. The challenge of managing cuts across at least 4 different levels of analysis: a view of the individual. What motivates them, shapes their behaviour, and makes them tick. Any approach to managing will make strong assumptions about core aspects of human beings, their nature, and what managers can do to get them to behave in ways valued by the manager and the organization. Managers have to think about the relationships between workers and their superiors: hierarchy and managing, groups. Managers have to think carefully about small-group dynamics, including what kinds of groups to create, how large groups are, and how to foster productive interaction: the enterprise. Managers have to see the bigger picture and create a culture and processes and practices that bring it all together to create sustainable excellence in performance.
