Takes place in gathering machines integrated with wire saddle-stitching units and trimmers for three-side trim. Consist of folded sheet feeders, block gatherer, and delivery. Folded sheets are opened in the middle and placed on a saddle bar that has an assembly chai with pushers. Methods for separating and opening folded signatures: rotating transfer technique (heidelberg) Folded signatures are piled into feeder by operator. Tilt-up sucker pulls the back edge of the bottom sheet off the pile. Gripper of the transfer drum separates the sheet. At the rear stop the pick-up drum gripper opens and the sheet is taken by the gripper of the counter-rotating transfer drum. Opener drum (rotating in opposite direction) grabs the other edge where the sheet is opened and dropped on the saddle bar: roll-off feeder technique (hepp feeder) Roll-off drum rotates against the back edge under the folded sheet pile of the magazine. Roll-off drum is equipped with 3 suction rollers.
