Mathisen chapter 7 - sparta, athens, and the classical age (500-387 bce) . Sparta - dorian city-state that developed in the peloponnesus during the dark ages. Very little trading, almost exclusively agricultural economy. Spartans could only expand their economy by using their army to take land from neighbours. 700 bce - spartan lawyer lycurgus made a constitution called the great rhetra. Established the spartan system of life, eunomia ( good rule . Intended to create unity by eliminating political importance of family-based units. Encouraged to speak in terse, pithy, ironic sentences. Only greek polis that retained its kings. Two kings were elected from the two leading aristocratic families by a vote of the male citizens. Kings alternated as chief magistrate; one was also required to remain in sparta at all times. Kings were supervised by give ephoroi ( overseers ) that were elected each year. Managed day to day activities of the city.
