Emphasis on teams and on product development: matrix. Each job has two components functional and product. Finance personnel for product b is responsible to the finance executive and the product b executive. Job: a group of related activities and duties held by a single employee or a number of incumbents. Position: the collection of tasks and responsibilities performed by one person. Job specialization (industrial engineering: positive connection between job specialization and productivity/efficiency, work simplification: believe: work can be broken down into clearly defined, highly specialized, repetitive tasks to maximize efficiency. Lower level jobs employees increase operating efficiency in stable environment not valuable in changing environment: gets boring, less fulfilling, high absenteeism to be effective job design must also satisfy human psychological and physiological needs.
