Work design requires a tradeoff of multiple criteria. Chapter topics: organizations, employees, work design criteria. Survival is the first rule of any organization. Normally organizations set prices at a level that more than covers costs. If the price charged is higher than the market can bear or thn the gov. permits then the cost must be reduced. One exception is the transfusion of public funds. Taxpayer pays some of the costs of the goods and services. Growth is the second rule of any organization. Unlike biological organisms, social organisms are composed of replaceable parts that continue to grow and grow. More employees give more power, prestige and status and income to higher managers of an organisation then less do. Although not a criterion, the number of employees is an important managerial criterion. Limits- (external restraints) imposed by society (usually gov. & unions) but sometimes the public opinion or religious/moral values.
