Telephone networks handled voice communication and computer networks handled data traffic. Now transforming into a single digital network using a shared internet-based standards and technology (expanded to include internet telephone +video services) Network consists of two or more computers. Includes: client computer, dedicated server computer, network interfaces, connection medium, network operating system, hub or switch. Network operating system routes and manages communications on the network and coordinates resources. Hubs = simple devices that that connect network components, sending packet of data to all other connected devices. Switch is bette b/c filter + forward data to specified destination on the network. Router = communications processor that sends data through different networks, and makes sure it gets sent to the right place. Software defined networking (sdn) = new networking approach in which many functioned by one central program.
