Chapter 1 & 2 introduction to law and the legal system. Business decisions have legal consequences negative consequences e. g. decision to dump pollutants into environment could result in liability for damage caused positive consequences e. g. decision to bind contractual party to promise could ensure that promises will be kept. Legal consequences very often have a direct effect on profits and losses liability may be imposed for poor decisions opportunities can be exploited by good decisions. All laws are rules but not all rules are laws (e. g. the rules of playing soccer are not laws). Law as a rule that can be enforced by courts. Law vs morality: not all behaviour that is immoral is also illegal. Moral wrongs may be informally sanctioned e. g. loss of friendships or damaged reputation. Legal wrongs can be formally sanctioned e. g. imprisonment or payment of damages. There are least two approaches to legal interpretation: textual approach: focuses on the wording of the law.
