Three major categories influence our perceptions of others: 1) characteristics of ourselves as perceivers; 2)characteristics of the target person being perceived; 3)characteristics of the situation in which the interaction takes place. Family, attitude, mood, cognitive structures, and self-concept all influence how we perceive others. Multiple observations to base impression when we know someone. Physical features, verbal and non-verbal communication can influence perception. Clothing and physical appearance says a great deal about a person and can play a big role in our perception of others. Verbal communication also affects our perception of others the topics they talk about, tone, accents etc. Non-verbal communication conveys a great deal of information eye contact, facial expressions, body movements, and posture. Situation between the people influence the perceiver s impression. The strength of situational cues affect our perceptions. Some situations provide strong cues as to appropriate behaviour.
