Human Resources Management:
Management of people in organizations to drive successful organizational
performance and achieve the organizations strategic goals
Responsible for hiring best talent, developing them, and creating productive work
environment
Human Resources management responsibilities;
Operational: administrative; hire and maintain employees
oRecent years, outsource operational, so that staff can focus on HRM
strategies
Strategic: making sure organization is staffed with effective human capital. They are
strategic partners and change agents
oStrategy: company’s plan for how it will balance its internal strengths and
weaknesses with external opportunities and threats in order to maintain a
competitive advantage
oEnvironmental scanning: identifying and analyzing external opportunities
and threats that may be crucial to an organizations success
oChange agents, customer service, lowering labour costs, employee
engagement
Measuring the value of HR: Metrics:
Metrics: stats to measure activities and results of HR
Balanced scorecard: a measurement system that translates an organizations
strategy into a comprehensive set of performance measures
External environmental issues
Economic conditions
oWhen economy is healthy, companies hire more employees as demand for
goods and services rise, in turn training and retention strategies become
more important.
oWhen there is a downturn, companies reduce pay and benefits or are forced to
lay off employees. Unemployment rate rises
oProductivity refers to ratio of organizations outputs (g/s) to its inputs (people,
capital, energy, and materials)
Workforce issues
oIncreasing diversity within the workplace with respect to different races and
