Orientation: a long term, continuous socialization process in which employee and employer expectations or obligations are considered. Training: short term, discrete efforts in which organizations impart info and instructions in an effort to help the recipient gain the required skills or knowledge to perform the job at adequate levels. A strategic approach to recruitment and retention includes a well integrated orientation program, before and after hiring. New employees need a clear understanding of company policies, expectations regarding their performance and operating procedures. In the long term, a comprehensive orientation (aka onboarding) program can lead to reductions in turnover, increased morale, fewer instances of corrective discipline, and fewer employee grievances, as well as reduced workplace injuries. Multi location organization new employees should be made aware of where the other locations are and what business functions are performed in each. Business and training goals must be aligned and training must be part of and organization"s strategic plan.
