Chapter One
-Human Resources Management, the management of people in organizations to
drive successful organizational performance and achievement of the organization’s
strategic goals. This involves formulating and implementing HRM systems
(recruitment, performance appraisal and compensation)
-human capital, the knowledge, education, training, skills and expertise of an
organizations workforce
Brief History of HRM
Scientific Management (late 1800s to early 1900s)
concern for production
involved scientifically analyzing manufacturing process
performance based pay
Human Resources (early 1900s to present)
concern for people and productivity
humans are now seen as resources
Human Resources Movement: Evolutionary Phases
Phase 1: early 1900s
personnel administration
hiring, firing, payroll/benefits processing
where it emerged
Phase 2: 1930s to 1950s
additonal roles and responsibilities
labour relations (ie min wage)
legal compliance
union liaison, compliance with new laws
human relations (orientation, performance, appraisal, employee relations
Phase 3: 1960s to 1980s
human resource management
expansion of workplace legislation
human rights, wages&benefits, working conditions, health&safety
outsourcing of many administrative functions
emphasis on contribution and proactive management of people
personnel and other departments grew, shift in emphasis, what systems need
to be put in place
Phase 4: 1990s to present
every line manager must possess basic HR skills
the role of HR today;
