We"re now in a second wave of health literacy research influenced by incr. sophisticated understandings of pedagogical theories relating to multiple literacies and their links to individual autonomy, choice, and empowerment. Individuals needs to access these resources to adopt different roles with relation to texts. Basic/functional literacy: basic readings, writing, and literacy skills, as well as knowledge of health conditions and health systems, which are desired outcomes of traditional health education initiatives. Communicative/interactive literacy: communicative and social skills that be used to derive meaning from different forms of communication and to apply new information to changing circumstances.
