Document Summary

Increased body temperature that results from a cytokine-induced increase in the set-point of the thermostatic center in the hypothalamus. Nonspecific response that is mediated by endogenous pyrogens released from host cells in response to infectious and non-infectious disorders. Resolved when the condition causing the increase in the set point is resolved. Pyrogens exogenous or endogenous: exogenous derived outside the body bacteria, endogenous initiated by exogenous pyrogens. Phagocytic cells digest bacteria and release pyrogenic cytokines interleukin-1(cid:533) (il-1(cid:533)), interleukin-6 (il-6), interferon-(cid:534) (ifn-(cid:534)), and tumour necrosis factor- (tnf- : exert action on hypothalamus. Prostaglandin e2 (pge2) final fever mediator in hypothalamus. Every degree increase in temperature increases hr by 10 bpm. Prodromal: mild headache, fatigue, general malaise, fleeting aches and pains. Chill: uncomfortable cold sensation, generalized shaking (rigours, skin is pale and covered with goose flesh, vasoconstriction and piloerection shivering, shivering causes body temperature to reach new set point.
