Action: blocks the cyclo-oxygenase (cox) enzyme that converts arachidonic acid to prostaglandins (causes inflammation). Use: mild to moderate pain, inflammation, stiffness, or tenderness caused by ankylosing spondylitis, arthralgia, surgical or dental procedures, dysmenorrhea, headache, neuralgia, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis. Onset- po= antipyretic: 0. 5-2. 5 hrs, analgesic: 30 mins, antiimflammatory: 7 days, iv= analgesic: unknown, antipyretic= within 2 hrs. Peak- po= antipyretic: 2-4 hrs, analgesic: 1-2 hrs, anti-inflammatory: 1-2 wks, iv= analgesic: unknown, antipyretic: within 2 hrs. Duration- po= antipyretic: 6-8 hr, analgesic: 4-6 hrs, antiimflammatory: unknown, iv= analgesic: 6 hrs, antipyretic: 4-6 hrs. Gi: gi upset, dyspepsia, heartburn, epigastric distress, nausea, abdominal pain. Hypersensitivity to individual drugs, gi lesions or bleeding, decompensating heart failure, hypertension, fluid retention, coagulation disorder. Use with ulcerogenic drugs produce additive effects. Use with po anticoagulants may increase their activity.
