Chapter 1 – Preliminaries Existentialism was a label for the emerging ideas of Jean­Paul Sartre and Simone de  Beauvoir Attached to two German philosophers – Martin Heidegger and Karl Jaspers  Soren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzche – rake through the past philosophers in search  of like­minded thinkers Existence – refers only to the kind of existence enjoyed by human beings ­ Refers only to those aspects of human being which distinguish it from the being  of everything else – “mere” physical objects ­ Existence is said to have a concern for itself o Kierkegaard – “an existing individual is constantly in the process of  becoming”  “their being is in question for them, an issue for them”  “an existing individual is constantly in the process of becoming” • could be said the same thing about clouds, however humans  can not be reference without reference to what he is in the  process of becoming • “always ahead of himself” Existentialist dicta – “existe
