Integumentary system is the bodies rst line of defence against the environment. Cutaneous membrane (skin): made up of the epidermis (super cial epithelium) and the dermis( underlying area of connective tissues. Accessory structures hair exocrine glands nails located in the dermis and through the epidermis to the surface of the skin. Deep to the dermis is this type of loose connective tissue aka super cial fascia or subcutaneous layer. Separates the integument from the deep fascia around other organs. Production of keratin, which protects against abrasions and serves as a water repellent. Storage of lipids and adipocytes in the dermis and in the hypodermic. Keratinocytes-body"s most abundant super cial cell dominate the epidermis. thin skin covers most of the body whereas thick skin covers the palms of the hands and bottoms of feet (thickness of the epidermis)
