Displaying emotions: the development (and control) of emotional. Studies have shown parents are able to tell positive emotion (i. e. interest, excitement) better than negative ones (i. e. anger, fear) By age 3, children begin to learn emotional display rules. Children in north america learned to express joy and mask disappointment when receiving a gift from their grandmother. At age 8, the child is unable to mask the disappointment. 12 or 13 the child is able to mask disappointment. Children use social referencing (assessing others" emotions and behaving accordingly) Empathy: the ability to experience the emotions of another. Temperament is a person"s unique way of reacting to situations. Nature and nurture contribute to a person"s temperament. Shyness: in the western culture shyness is a social disadvantage. In some eastern cultures shyness is seen as an advantage. Several components of temperament are stable through childhood and sometimes into adulthood.
