PSY 302 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Twin, Y Chromosome, Twin Study
Document Summary
Heredity and environment work together to make up a person"s personality. Francis galton concluded that very close relatives of an eminent man were most likely to be high achievers themselves than were less close relatives. Scientists are now able to map out the entire genome- the complete set of genes-of several plants and animals. The current estimate for humans is around 26,000. Most of our genes are devoted, in decreasing order, to making us animals, vertebrates, mammals, primates and humans. The key elements of the model are the: Genotype: the genetic material an individual inherits. Phenotype: the observable expression of the genotype, including both body characteristics and behaviour. Environment: every aspect of the individual and his or her surroundings other than the genes themselves. These three elements are involved in four relations: The parents" genetic contribution to the child"s genotype. The contribution of the child"s genotype to his or her own phenotype.
