The gnp is a good indicator of cross-national economic growth but fails to recognize the distribution of national wealth. In some countries, the gnp may be very high but the actual wealth is concentrated within a small portion of the population while the majority holds much less. A comparison based solely on economic factors fails to acknowledge elements of social life. Does not measure the well-being or happiness of a country"s residents but it does provide an indication of a nation"s progress towards promoting long life and good health. Gender-related development index (gdi) it is the hdi, but adjusted for gender inequality.
