SSH 205 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: General Idea, Vagueness
Document Summary
Six habits of the mind which often leave writers open to the invasion of relying on ready-made phrases: Banking: the student is given information that is later given back more or less in the same form (deposit followed by with drawl) Language of reading restated in different words. Reader must try to figure out what is worrying the author or what he/she is trying to fix . Once this is realized, you will have a clearer perspective of how the reading operates. Generalizing: problem with this is it removes the mind from the data which produced the generalization, we remember reactions and impressions, we forget specific causes of negative impressions. Deprivation of material to think with: analytical habit of the mind is that it pays attention to detail, offer a few details to explain what caused you to think how you do. The vaguer a word is, the higher its position on the ladder.
