Document Summary

Sampling refers to the selection of individuals and other units of analysis for research. Need to sample is almost universal in quantitative research. Difficult to remove bias altogether and get a truly representative sample. Not using a random method to pick the sample. Random method=each element has the same chance of being selected like numbers from a lottery cage. If random method is not used there is a risk that the selection process will be affected by human judgment. Bias eliminated through use of probability sampling. Sampling frame or list of potential subjects is inadequate. If sampling frame excludes some cases or is inaccurate, sample derived from it may not represent the population. Some people in the same refuse to participate or cannot be contacted, in other words non-response. Those who agree to participate may differ from those who refuse or cannot be reached in ways relevant to the subject matter being investigated.
