SSH 301 Chapter 11: Chapter 11
Document Summary
Research participants should not be harmed by taking part in research activities. Each method of social research comes with its own set of ethical issues. Before a research project involving humans begins a research ethics board (reb) must review and approve the project. Rebs may approve a research project, request modifications or reject it outright. Van der hoonaard suggested it might be more difficult to get ethics approval for qualitative research than for quantitative studies. Researchers themselves disagree on the ethical acceptability of certain research practices. Tcps2s codes and guidelines provide some direction, allow for a degree of flexibility. Tcps2 outline 3 core principles for the conduct of research involving human subjects: respect for persons, concern for welfare and justice. Humans shouldn"t be treated as mere objects" or means to an end. Researchers must recognize that people have rights. Respect for persons is arguably the most fundamental of all principles considered.
