SOC 104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Conrad Burns
Document Summary
Canadian residential schools and the trc calls to action. What we have learned: principles of truth and reconciliation. Language is necessary to define and maintain world view. In residential schools, english and french were the languages most often allowed. Students were punished for speaking their own languages, especially aboriginal students. They were punished by getting slapped on the had or having their mouths washed out. In 1970, students in northwestern ontario were not allowed to speak their native language in the presence of staff members. Conrad burns referred to this as cultural genocide people were beaten because they followed their own ways . This system at school was causing a divide between students and their parents, one student even said that they hated their parents. Future generations were affected because students who later had children avoided teaching them their native language. Children poorly fed and raised in unsanitary conditions > highly susceptible to health problems as adults.
