Mr. wilson you are correct, stereotypes can be helpful or not helpful to individuals and organizations depending on the situation in which a stereotype is used. Stereotypes are generalizations, often seen as the process of assigning traits to people based on their membership in a social category 1. These traits/qualities assigned to persons usually relate to their personality traits, physical characteristics, abilities, occupation race, nationality and sexual orientation to name a few. Stereotypes can be both negative and positive, but both can be harmful, unfair and misleading. Some common positive stereotypes include; asians are good at math/are smart, all blacks are great basketball players, all indians are deeply spiritual and all. Canadians are very polite some common negative stereotypes include, blonds are dumb, women are not as smart as men and can"t do a job as good as a man, christians are homophobic and men are always messy/untidy.
