This is the outer layer that consists of dead keratinized cells packed close together. These cells are constantly shed (desquamated) and replaced with new ones from below: the epidermis is replaced every 4 weeks, aside from the palms and soles, the epidermis is uniformly thin. On the palms and soles, skin is thicker cause of work and weight bearing. It is also avascular; nourished by blood vessels in the dermis below: skin color is derived from three source. The prevailing color is affected by the relative proportions of these shades.
