Nursing PSY113 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Rapid Eye Movement Sleep, Lucid Dream, Circadian Rhythm
Document Summary
Consciousness: our objective experience of the world and ourselves. Psy113 chapter 5: consciousness altered (e. g. through sleep paralysis). It encompasses our ever-changing awareness of thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and actions. Lo 5. 1: explain the role of the circadian rhythm and how our bodies react to a disruption in our biological clocks. Circadian rhythm: clinical changes that occur on a roughly 24hr basis in many biological processes (e. g. hormone release, body temperature, brain waves, and drowsiness) It is regulated by neurons located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (scn), which is part of the hypothalamus. It is responsible for triggering our sense of fatigue by increasing melatonin: a disruption in sleep can cause many health problems and increase the risk of injury. For example, it can cause fatal accidents, diabetes, and heart disease: the amount of sleep needed depends on many factors, specifically age. People (<1%) with dec3 mutation: 6 hours or less.
