Chapter 3 Musculoskeletal Anatomy  Anatomical Terms o Anterior  Front Side of the body, also known as ventral o Caudal  Quadrupeds, the tail end o Cranial  Above or near the head, also known as superior o Distal  Farthest end from the trunk or head o Dorsal  Back of the body, also known as posterior o Inferior  Below also, toward the feet o Infra  Prefix meaning below or under o Lateral  Away from the midline o Medial  Toward the midline o Posterior  Back side of the body, also known as the dorsal o Proximal  Closest part nearest the trunk or head o Superior  Above or near the head, also known as cranial o Supra  Prefix meaning above or over o Ventral  Front side of the body, also known as anterior Skeletal System Muscle Anatomy and Function  Sliding Filament Theory o Muscle produces force and shortens due to the sliding action of the muscles o Muscle fibers are bound together in groups by tough connective tissue Movement Terminology  Flexion o Movement where the joint angle gets smaller and causes the angle to decrease  Extension/Hyperextension o Movement where the joint angle gets bigger and causes the angle to increase  Adduction o Bringing the limb (or shoulder blade) toward the midline of the body  Abduction o Moving the limb away from the body Muscle Action  Sternocleidomastoid o Flexion at the neck  Deltoid o Abduction of the arm  Latissimus dorsi o Extension and adduction of the shoulder joint  Pectoralis major o Flexion, horizontal adduction and adduction at the shoulder joint  Biceps branchii o Flexion at the elbow joint; also a weak flexor of the shoulder  Brachialis o Flexion of the elbow  Brachioradialis o Flexion of the elbow  Triceps o Extension at the elbow joint  Trapezius o Shoulder Gridle Movements o Scapula o Cervical and Thoracic Spine  Rhomboid o Adduction and downward rotation of the scapula  Abdominals o Trunk Flexion  Erector Spinae o Extension of Spine  Iliopsoas o Flexion of the hip and trunk  Gluteus Maximus o Extension at the hip  Quadriceps o Extension at the knee  Hamstrings o Flexion at the knee and extension at the hip  Thigh Adductors o Adduction of the thigh (moving it toward the midline)  Thigh Abductors o Abduction of the thigh (moving it away from the midline)  Tibialis Anterior o Dorsiflexion of the ankle (toe rotating toward knee)  Gastrocnemius o Plantar Flexion at the Ankle (Toe pointing away from knee) and flexion at the knee  Soleus o Plantar Flexion (toe pointing away from knee) at the ankle Muscle and Joint Movement Classification  Agonist o A muscle that causes the motion of the exercise (ex. Bicep in Bicep Curl)  Antagonist o A muscle that can move the joint
