Document Summary

Perception is the process by which individual organize and interpret their impression to give meaning to their environment. Perception is important in ob because people"s behavior is based on their perception of what reality is, not on reality itself. The world as it is perceived is the world that is behaviorally important. There are 3 factors that shape and distort perception: the perceiver, the target or the situation. What you perceive is influenced by your personal characteristics : attitudes, motives, interest, past experiences and, expectations. Studies have found peoples perception of others reveal a lot about themselves. Loud people are more noticed than quiet ones. Because we don"t look at target in isolation the relationship to its background also influnces our perception: novelty, motion, sounds, size, background, proximity, similarity. The time at which we see can object/event can influence attention, same with location, light, heat ect: time, work setting, social setting.
