Population = aggregates of orgs that share common dependence on material & cultural enviro. Adaptation can"t be the only/primary way that structural variability occurs. Previous investments in equip & specialized personnel constrain adaptation. Decision makers do not operate w/ perfect info. Resistance to change w/in org due to redistribution of power b/t subunits. High costs assoc. w/ changing procedure/authority that are considered org norms. Legal & fiscal barriers to entry & exit from markets limit adaptation possibilities. Info about external forces limited, costly to obtain & difficult to interpret. Drawing parallels b/t org adaptation & biological adaptation. Useful for creating analogies but has some limitations. Genetic info when passed on is invariant, whereas orgs can change form entirely. Indiv orgs & pops of orgs can increase in size w/o limit. Only extreme org adaptations can be seen as selection. Fitness = probability that org form would persist in a certain enviro.
