Galton coined the term eugenics : the study of the agencies under social control that may improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations, either physically or mentally. Race suicide as a result of a healthy demographic balance being maintained, enticing the fit to breed or take measures to restrict the births of the unfit : criminals and mentally ill individuals are deemed unfit to breed. Perfectionist preacher john humphrey noyes defended the notion of improving the human race by judicious breeding : poor considered degenerates, weren"t demoralized. Galton and pearson were close in spirit to the american progressives who felt threatened by the rise of both big businesses and organized labour. Pearson asserted that women"s roles were pre-determined by the biological facts and reproductive functions: sexualology was used to establish her physical capacities. Higher education may result in raised intelligence of women or lead to their degeneration. Feminists had the duty to advance their ideas with caution.
