CRIM 104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Dete
Document Summary
Howard becker is most well-known for the labelling theories. Becker saw deviance as being socially constructed. He talked about the subjective, as opposed to the objective, nature of social problems. He explored how they came to be defined as social problems through the process of social reaction. Deviance was in the eye of the beholder. Unless behavior was identified as being deviant by some other individual, it would likely be ignored altogether. If crusades are successful, then new rules result: crusades may transform itself from a reform movement into a social institution, in order to survive, they must search for and identify other urgent social problems that require its attention. Backer was also known for his work on master status and auxiliary status. Becker stated that a person"s master status would override his auxiliary or secondary status: they may possess positive characteristics but people would find it difficult to see beyond the negative master status.
