Not to be confused with ballistics (the study of a projectile in motion) Handguns/pistols = firearms that are designed to be held and fired with one hand. 3 common handguns: single-shot handguns: can only fire one round revolvers: several firing chambers semiautomatics: removable magazine that is often contained within the grip of the firearm (fires one shot per trigger pull) Single-action: require hammer to be manually cocked backward each time before the trigger is pulled in order to fire. Double-action: cock the hammer when the trigger is pulled and the reload the firing chamber after the round is fired. Long guns: rifles/shotguns (fires while resting on shoulder) The inner surface of the barrel of a gun leaves its markings on a bullet passing through it.
